Industrial Design Registration in Pakistan: How to Protect the Look of Your Product

Industrial design registration in Pakistan to protect product shape and pattern

Copycats in Pakistan rarely copy your logo first. They copy the shape of your bottle, the pattern on your fabric or the outline of your fan blade, because that is what buyers recognise on the shelf. Industrial design registration gives you exclusive rights over how a product looks. It is cheaper and faster than a patent, and for many consumer and industrial products it is the right that actually stops imitation. This guide explains what qualifies, how to apply at IPO-Pakistan and how to keep the registration alive.

Quick answer: An industrial design protects the visual features of a product: its shape, configuration, pattern or ornamentation. In Pakistan, designs are registered by IPO-Pakistan under the Registered Designs Ordinance, 2000. The design must be new or original and must not have been disclosed publicly before filing. Registration lasts 10 years from the filing or priority date and can be renewed for two further 10-year periods, giving up to 30 years of protection.

What counts as an industrial design?

A registrable design is the appearance of an article that appeals to the eye, applied by an industrial process. Typical examples from Pakistani industry include:

  • Bottle, jar and container shapes for beverages, cosmetics and edible oil
  • Textile prints and patterns, embroidery layouts and lawn designs
  • Furniture, lighting fixtures, sanitary fittings and household appliances
  • Footwear soles and uppers, bags and accessories
  • Surgical instrument handles, tools and machine housings
  • Packaging forms and distinctive product outlines

Function is not protected by a design. If the value lies in how something works, look at a patent instead; our guide to patent registration in Pakistan explains the difference. Brand names and logos are protected through trademark registration.

What cannot be registered?

  • Designs already disclosed to the public before the filing or priority date
  • Features dictated solely by technical function
  • Designs that are not significantly different from known designs or combinations of known features
  • Designs contrary to public order or morality
  • Methods or principles of construction

How to register an industrial design in Pakistan

  1. Check novelty. Review the design register, competitor catalogues and online marketplaces to confirm your design is new.
  2. Prepare representations. Produce clear drawings or photographs showing the design from all relevant views. Remove anything not part of the claimed design, such as text and logos.
  3. Identify the article and class. State the product the design is applied to, using the Locarno classification.
  4. File the application. Submit the prescribed form, representations, statement of novelty if required and fee at IPO-Pakistan, directly or through an agent.
  5. Respond to examination. The Registrar examines formalities and novelty and may raise objections that you must answer within the time given.
  6. Registration and publication. Once accepted, the design is registered, the certificate is issued and the registration is published.

How long does design protection last?

PeriodWhat happens
Years 1 to 10Initial protection from the filing or priority date
End of year 10First renewal, extending protection to 20 years
End of year 20Second renewal, extending protection to 30 years
After 30 yearsDesign enters the public domain

Renewal can be requested in the final months before expiry. A short late-renewal window with an additional fee is available, but leaving it until then is risky. If you also hold trademarks, put both on one calendar; our guide to trademark renewal in Pakistan covers that side.

Timing: file before you launch

The most common reason design rights fail is that the owner launched first and filed later. Product photos on social media, exhibition displays and samples sent to distributors can all count as public disclosure. Build design filing into your product launch plan, alongside packaging approvals and regulatory registrations.

Exporting? Think about foreign protection

A Pakistani registration protects you in Pakistan only. Pakistan is a Paris Convention member, so you can usually claim priority from your Pakistani filing in other member countries if you file there within six months. Exporters of textiles, surgical instruments and consumer goods often register in key buyer markets at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an industrial design registration last in Pakistan?

Protection lasts 10 years from the filing or priority date and can be renewed twice for 10 years each, for a maximum of 30 years.

What is the difference between a design and a patent?

A design protects how a product looks. A patent protects how an invention works. A product can be protected by both if it has a new appearance and a new technical feature.

Can I register a design after I start selling the product?

Generally no. Public sale or display before filing can destroy novelty. File before launch, exhibitions or online promotion.

Can textile prints be registered as designs?

Yes. Patterns and ornamentation applied to fabric are a common category of registered design in Pakistan, and registration helps act against copied prints.

Which office registers designs in Pakistan?

Industrial designs are registered by IPO-Pakistan under the Registered Designs Ordinance, 2000.
